Start your Northern Italian experience with an afternoon in the mountain town of Cortina d’Ampezzo before embarking on your high country adventure into the rugged mountains of the Dolomite range.

Embrace the heart of the Dolomites with hardy hikes over steep mountain passes and warm evenings in comfortable, well-equipped high mountain huts with professional guides. Morning, evening, and all day-long, the views from these remote mountain sanctuaries are truly breathtaking as you witness the massive vertical peaks of Tre Cime and the impressive north face of Cristallo.

After five days of high mountain adventure, you return to Venice to enjoy a full day of rest and recovery in this world-famous art city. Optional – arrive early or leave late and enjoy more time in Venice and Italy.


The Dolomites are a physically challenging adventure. You will be hiking up to seven hours per day on varying terrain with up to 3,500 feet of vertical gain and loss on some days.

Day 1. Arrive  Marco Polo Airport (Venice) –  Cortina d’Ampezzo

After arriving at Marco Polo Airport, you will meet our tour representative at 2:00pm and have a private transfer to the alpine village of Cortina d’Ampezzo, site of the 1956 Winter Olympics. Framed by the magnificent peaks of the Dolomite Alps, Cortina d’Ampezzo is an ideal launch point for your weeklong hiking excursion.

We suggest going outside and walking around the village this afternoon to help you recover from jetlag. At 6:30pm, you meet your fellow adventurers and your bi-lingual, certified mountain guide. Enjoy dinner and discuss the upcoming adventure at a great restaurant in this quaint mountain town!

Airport transfer (2 hours)

Day 2. Hike from Falzarego Pass – Malga Ra Stua Hut via Val Tranvenanzes

After breakfast and a shuttle to the Falzarego Pass (2105m,6906ft) trailhead, you begin the hike by ascending the trail towards the five Tofanes towers – these amazing rock faces are among the most beautiful in the region.

You and your fellow hikiers will crest the moonscape-like Bos Pass (2330m/7645ft), then descend into the Travenanzes valley, framed by massive rocky peaks looming above. The trail transitions into a lush alpine forest when passing through the Rosa Pass to the valley of San Uberto.

The final uphill leg of the day will be via a short shuttle transfer to the Malga Ra Stua hut (1668m/5472ft), located in an open alpine meadow with generous views of the surrounding mountains. After a delicious and hearty dinner, spend some time soaking in the clear night night sky and enjoying the company of your companions during your first night in the heart of the Dolomites.  (B, L, D)
Col Falzarego transfer (35 minutes)

Col Falzarego to Malga Ra Stua Hut hike (13km/8.1mi, 500m/1640ft elevation gain and 1050m/3445ft loss, 6-7 hours)

Day 3. Malga Ra Stua Hut  – Sora Forno Pass – Braies Lake

This morning, hike right from the front door on a scenic trail past lakes and meadows before ascend to the alpine zone and the Biella hut (2327m/7635ft). After a brief rest at the refuge, you proceed up to the Porta Sora al Forno Pass (2388m/7835ft) where you leave the Croda del Becco trail to traverse to the other side of the mountain.

A steep but established trail brings you down into a rocky valley and later onto the lush banks of the Braies Lake (1494m,4900ft). Tonight, dine and slumber at the charming, historic lakeside Hotel Pragser Wildee, an architectural landmark since 1899. (B, L, D)

Malga Ra Stua Hut to Braies Lake hike (15km/9.3mi, 720m/2363ft elevation gain and 894m/2935ft loss, 5-6 hours)

Day 4. Braies Lake – Cavallo Pass – Pratopiazza

Today, your adventure continues! You’ll begin with an ascent into the alpine tundra of Cavallo pass (2287m,7500ft), then traverse to the rocky path hugging the north slope Croda Rossa mountain. Overlooking the small village of Ponticello, you make your way down toward the meadows of the alpine plateau of Pratopiazza.

The Pratopiaza hut enjoys an expansive view of Croda Rossa as well as glimpse across the valley to the peaks of Tre Cime. This evening, you can all marvel as the sunset transforms the peaks into pink and orange stone giants with the fading light. (B, L, D)

Braies Lake to Pratopiazza Hut (13km/8.1mi, 950m/3117ft elevation gain and 450m/1476ft loss, 6 hours)

Day 5. Pratopiazza – Val Popena – Misurina – Tre Cime – Misurina

The morning begins with the reverse of sunset as sunrise casts its glow on the peaks once again. You’ll descend from the plateau through an alpine forest to the Landro valley, accompanied by views of the rugged north face of Cristallo peaks.

Following a casual lunch, you are escorted by  private taxi to the Auronzo hut, at the bottom of the famed Tre Cime, aka Three Summits. These three vertical peaks epitomize the Dolomites and attract some of the world’s best climbers.

This afternoon, you get to circumnavigate these famous and unique peaks while searching out and watching climbers clinging to the vertical walls above you. A local bus shuttles you to the quiet accommodations of the Hotel Albergo Miralago on the shores of Misurina Lake.

Another beautiful vista and tranquil setting awaits you all in the evening. (B, L, D)

Pratopiazza Hut to Propena Valley(8km/5mi, 2.5 hours) and

Tre Cime hike (6km/3.7mi, 2.5 hours) equals (14km/8.7mi, 600m/1970ft elevation gain and 1050m/3445ft loss, 5 hours)

Private taxi from Hotel Cime di Lavaredo to Rifugio Auronzo (45 minutes)

Local Bus from Rifugio Auronzo to Misurina (30 minutes)

Day 6.  Misurina – Col Tre Crocci – Faloria mountain hut – Cortina d’Ampezzo – Venice

This morning you start your adventures with a 20 minute bus ride to Passo Tre Crocci, where you begin a gradual hike to the Faloria hut for amazing views of Cortina d’Ampezzo and the surrounding mountains. Celebrate your amazing hiking adventure over lunch before descending through a beautiful rich forest to the town of Cortina d’Ampezzo.

From there, you’ll transfer to the Marco Polo Airport at Venice, where you will say goodbye to your tour leader. From the airport, you will transfer into the city via motor boat taxis for a tour of the the historical center of Venice and then on to the comfortable Hotel Panada.

Tonight, celebrate with your fellow adventurers at one of the fine downtown restaurants in historic Venice! (B, L)

Misurina to Tre Crocci via local bus (20 minutes)

Misurina to Cortina d’Ampezzo hike (13km/8.1mi, 600m/1967ft elevation gain and 650m/2133ft loss, 5 hours)

Cortina d’Ampezzo to Marco Polo Airport (Venice) via private taxi (2 hours)

Marco Polo Airport to Venice downtown (Piazza San Marco) via taxi motor boats (1hour, 10 minutes)

To note : There is a four minute walk with luggage to the hotel from the boat stop.

Day 7.  Free day to Venice

Today is your day to explore the many attractions of Venice. You can people-watch in the Piazza San Marco, visit the Byzantine masterpiece of St. Mark’s Basilica, ride a gondola through Venice’s famous waterways or just enjoy a quiet area of the city while soaking in the Venitian lifestyle.

Tonight, explore one of the many fine restaurants in this romantic city. (B)

Day 8. Venice – Marco Polo Airport

Today, you say a bittersweet ‘Arrivederci’ to Venice and begin your journey back home with new friends, great memories, and a sense of success. We hope to see you again soon! (B)

Single Supplement Policy:All tour pricing is based on double-occupancy lodging. A single supplement is paid by participants who specifically request single accommodations, subject to availability. If you are traveling alone and wish to share accommodations, we will try to match you with a roommate of the same gender. 

If you reserve your tour at least 90 days ahead and a roommate is not available, you will only be charged a “forced” single supplement  of half the standard single supplement (unless otherwise noted in the detailed itinerary).  Single accommodations are limited so you are encouraged to reserve early.

Meeting Time & Place: Venice-Marco Polo Airport (airport code VCE) on Day 1. After clearing customs, you will be met by our local representative at 2 :00pm and transferred to your hotel in Cortina d’Amprezzo (approximately two hours). If you decide to arrive a day earlier or in the afternoon, then the Cortina Express leaves the airport from outside the Arrivals Terminal and arrives at the Cortina d’Amprezzo bus station.

Departure Time &  Place:  Venice-Marco Polo Airport (airport code VCE) on Day 8. Do not book departing flights earlier than noon.

Transport to airport by Bus:

Linea 15 ACTV to consult the timetable (join file). Bus every 30 minutes all the day. From Via Forte Marghera (bus stop 300m from the Hôtel) to Marco Polo Venice Airport (bus stop in front of the airport). Price, about 10€/person.

Transport to airport by Taxi:

Book your taxi directly at the hotel. Price is 25€/person.

Best Time To Travel: late June – late September

Weather and Climate:Due to the alpine environment, weather is variable throughout the day and by elevation. Dressing in layers will be essential to your comfort throughout the day. Rain is possible at any time and weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains, so having rain gear is highly recommended.

At the same time, the sun is strong at higher elevations, and therefore adequate precautions should be taken to prevent sunburn, even on cool, sunny days. On average, the temperature in June through August range from highs in the 70’s and 80’s Fahrenheit and lows in the 40’s and 50’s Fahrenheit.

Physical Preparation: This tour is designed for energetic and flexible individuals who like to be active, have a spirit of adventure and possess a positive attitude. Most activities are 3-4 hours in either the morning or afternoon with a lunch stop in between.

It is very important that you realistically assess your physical condition with regard to the demands of this trip. All participants must be in good overall physical condition.  The more physically prepared you are for this tour, the more you will enjoy this unique, adventure experience.

All accommodations have private rooms and private bathrooms except Day 2 and 4 which are mountain huts with dormitories and shared bathrooms.

Day 1. Cortina d’Ampezzo Hotel (private room and bath)

We finalize our Cortina d’Ampezzo hotel accommodations within 60 days of the departure date. All hotels are three-star located in the downtown area and feature double, twin and single rooms with private baths.

Day 2. Malga Ra Stua Hut (dormitories, shared bath)

In the typical “Stua” (the dining room), you’ll enjoy the taste of food and characteristic traditional mountain cuisine. Don’t forget to enjoy the tasty sweets such as strudel, sacher Ra and Stua cake !

Day 3.  Hotel Pragser Wildsee (double rooms, shared bath)
Located in the middle of the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Preserve and on one of the most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites, the Hotel Pragser Wildsee has over a century experience of hosting guests to this region.

Open since July 10, 1899, the hotel is an architectural landmark that has welcomed everyday hikers up to the Grand Duke Franz Ferdinand. Take a moment to explore the storied history of the area documented in the hotel’s library.

Day 4. Pratopiazza Hut (dormitories, shared bath)

Besides the comfortable lodging accommodations for hikers of the Dolomites, Pratopiazza Refuge creates a perfect combination of local delicacies and Italian cuisine, such as the “tris” of pasta and Tyrolean gnocchi, the “Brettljausen” (flavorful snacks made of local ingredients), soups with “knodels” (dumplings) and home-made cakes and pastries with characteristic regional flavors – all in complete harmony with the mountain setting.

Day 5. Misurina – Hotel Albergo Miralago (double room, shared bath)

Situated in the heart of the Dolomites and surrounded by the majestic massifs of the Three Peaks, the Group Cadini from Sorapiss and Crystal, the Hotel Albergo Miralago is a quiet retreat for the weary traveler.

The family-owned lodge with 23 quaint rooms provides home-cooked regional cuisine with a personal touch.

Day 6 and 7.  Venice – Hotel Panada (double room, private bath)

The Hotel Antico Panada is located in the heart of Venice, in a seventeenth century building, recently renovated according to recent European standards to include all the modern comforts, cozy common rooms and everything typical of the warmth of Venetian palazzos.
